Properly Maintaining Your Shears, Clippers, & Blades
Lubricating Shears
Lubricating your shears is very important to keep them working their best and to keep debris from building up in the joint. It takes less than 30 seconds and should be done several times each day. Please watch this quick video and follow these simple steps if you are unsure how to properly lubricate your shears.
• Place 1 small drop of oil on either side of the joint and on each blade.
• Using a clean and dry cloth or tissue, spread the oil along each blade.
• Gently open and close the shear a few times.
• Wipe excess oil from the joint area and from each blade.
• Proceed to setting shear tension.
Setting Shear Tension
Setting the tension on your shears is the most important aspect to shear maintenance. Running your shears too loose will allow the edges to grind against each other causing them to become dull prematurely. Tension setting can be completed in about 10-15 seconds and should be done at the beginning of each day. Please watch this quick video and follow these simple steps if you are unsure how to properly set the tension on your shears.
• Hold your shears vertically with the handles pointing down.
• Lift the finger blade (the one with the finger rest) to roughly 90° of the thumb blade.
• Drop the finger blade, your shears should only close about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way.
• If your shears close more than 2/3 of the way tighten the adjustment screw or nut, if your shears close less than 1/2 of the way loosen the adjustment screw or nut.
• Repeat the steps above until your shears tension is properly set.
Cleaning Clippers and Blades
Cleaning your clippers and blades can prolong the life of blade drives, hinges, and the sharpness of the blades themselves. It only takes about 30 seconds to perform this procedure and should be done each time you remove a blade from your clipper. Please watch this quick video and follow these simple steps if you are unsure how to properly clean your clippers and blades.
• Remove the clipper blade from your clipper.
• Clean the clipper using a fine nylon bristle brush (supplied free of charge by Acute Sharpening) by brushing away hair or fur from the following areas:
• Top of the clipper
• Under and around the hinge
• Around the blade drive
• Clean the blade using a fine nylon bristle brush (supplied free of charge by Acute Sharpening) by brushing away hair or fur from the following areas:
• Spring and socket
• Blade drive notch on cutter blade
• Teeth on comb and cutter blades
• Proceed to lubricating clipper blades.
Lubricating Clipper Blades
Keeping your clipper blades lubricated will not only help keep them sharp but will keep them cool as well. Unlubricated blades tend to build up heat through friction which can dull your blades very quickly. Lubricating a clipper blade only takes about 30 seconds and should be done a few times each day. Please watch this quick video and follow these simple steps if you are unsure how to properly lubricate your clipper blades.
• Using a needle oiler (supplied free of charge by Acute Sharpening) place 1 small drop of oil in the following areas:
• The exposed areas of the “back rail” on the comb blade
• The teeth of the cutter blade where they meet the comb blade
• The area where the plastic blade guide meets the cutter blade
• Install the oiled blade onto your clipper.
• Run your clipper for at least 3-5 seconds, always remember to turn the clipper on before latching the blade into place.
• Remove blade and place in a clean area or case.
